In Loving Memory ~
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Finlay James Macpherson on October 3, 2021.
Finlay was born in Wendover, England on February 23, 1946. He was the eldest son of Erskine and Janet Macpherson. He immigrated to Canada with the family as a young boy in 1953, settling first in Edmonton, and shortly thereafter in Kerrisdale, BC.
Finlay attended High School at Prince of Wales in Vancouver. He was a gifted student, and had a keen interest in chemistry and science. He later attended BCIT where he found his calling in organic chemistry.
Finlay spent many years living and working in Cassiar, BC at the mine where he was the organic chemist. He often reminisced about the golden years he spent enjoying life in British Columbia's far north, and spoke of its pristine land, Indigenous people, crystal clear lakes, mountains of jade, and above all else the freedom he enjoyed doing what he pleased while living there.
In mid-life, Finlay moved back to Vancouver, where he self-taught himself everything there was to know about the emerging universe of computers.
To the surprise and delight of his young nephews, he programmed his computer to speak to them through a speaker in the mid- 80s. He lived in Ladner, BC for a time, owning and operating Delta Computers in Tsawwassen, BC.
Finlay's last chapter in life was spent in the beautiful Bella Coola valley of BC, where he lived on a small acreage bordered by a salmon bearing river, made many longtime friends, and once again lived a free and simpler life.
Finlay was a very intellectually inquisitive person and believed that our present physical reality isn't what most of us believe it to be, along the lines of what modern day physicists express about the nature of our perception of the material world. He often spoke about the need to look after the natural environment, the injustice experienced by Indigenous Canadians, and the need to keep government power in check.
Finlay had many loves in his life, was married twice, first to Moira Small, and later to Corinne Langner.
Finlay leaves behind his children Kelvin, Alexander, Alicia, Leeanne, Breanna, brother Roger, sister Elizabeth, and nephews Malcolm, Paul, Sean, and Ian.
Finlay left us in a peaceful way and lived a full, experience-filled life. We will miss him.
