Just days before the cannabis crowd in B.C.’s capital welcomes the unofficial holiday of 4/20, Victoria has earned itself a new moniker.
Uber Eats has named Victoria as B.C.’s “dopest city” after it topped the number of cannabis orders on the platform over the past year.
Cannabis deliveries via Uber Eats began in the province in April 2023 and the app now hosts more than 80 licensed retailers across B.C. and Ontario.
Coming behind Victoria on the list of dopest B.C. cities were North Vancouver, Vancouver, Port Moody and New Westminster. The most popular products ordered on the platform were pre-rolls, edibles and bud, with the top cannabis strain ordered in B.C. being one called Tiger Blood.
Uber Eats said in a news release that retailers value the option to grow their businesses using the platform’s services. It added that cannabis delivery can help combat the underground market, which in Ontario still accounts to more than 40 per cent of non-medical weed sales.
Delivery of the products is also expected to help decrease impaired driving, Uber Eats said.
April 20 will be marked in Greater Victoria with several events to celebrate cannabis.
The Cult After Dark series at The Vic Theatre will feature one of Hollywood’s favourite stoners as it screens Jeff Bridges’ portrayal of ‘The Dude’ in The Big Lebowski.
The University of Victoria’s Cinecenta theatre will host a 4/20 double feature starting with Reefer Madness, a 1936 film first released to scare America’s youth away from drugs. That will be followed by the coming-of-age classic, Dazed and Confused, which Cinecenta calls the fundamental stoner movie.
Herald Street Brew Works will celebrate 4/20 with live music, including reggae, in a double bill.
“There will be songs you definitely know — ones that are very closely knitted with 4/20 and cannabis culture — and also you’ll probably be able to spot the most notable stoners from pop culture gracing the stage,” the Earthly Delights, one of the bands playing at the brewery, said in a news release.
