Mounties in Clearwater are asking the public for any information about a side-by-side with blue lights, whose driver is alleged to have tried to stop traffic.

Sgt. Grant Simpson said on Sunday, April 7, at 8:30 p.m. a motorist was stopped on Highway 5 near McCorvie Lakes Forest Service Road in Birch Island by a male driving a yellow and black Can-Am Defender side-by-side with a red and blue police style-light bar on the roof.

The male driving the side-by-side was wearing blue high visibility coveralls and tried to gain access to the persons’ vehicle, Simpson said, noting the person realized that it was not the police and fled.

“It’s concerning,” Simpson said Monday. “It’s the first time it’s happened here.”

Simpson said the detachment does have a marked side-by-side, but it would be operated by a member in full uniform.

Use of blue flashing lights is restricted to peace officers in B.C.

Anyone with information regrading this information, or know if someone matching this description, or see the vehicle, contact the Clearwater RCMP detachment.

“We will certainly go and check it out.”
